St. Amant Fights Hard For Podium Finish at Lake Erie
NORTH EAST, Pa. (July 29) -- When Saturday's BFGoodrichTires.com
250 reached the home stretch with about 50 laps around Lake Erie
Speedway left in the race, USAR Hooter's Pro Cup Northern Division
points leader Gary St. Amant knew he was in trouble. The
transmission on his No. 7 JEGS.com/Speedco Chevrolet Monte Carlo was
giving him trouble and he was doing everything he could just to keep
it in gear.
 "I
could feel my whole season slipping away," said St. Amant, who
has led the points for the last five races. "I was
worried."
But showing the mettle that netted him 23 wins and two world
championships on the now defunct ASA Stock Car Series, St. Amant
held his car together and managed an impressive third-place finish
to take another giant step towards his first Northern Division
title.
"I felt like a drag racer towards the end," St. Amant
said. "I was holding her in high gear and I just kept my foot
down. It was a bear to drive but we got the finish we were looking
for. It was definitely the toughest race of the year and we're
fortunate to get a third out of this race, believe me."
This was St. Amant's third No. 3 finish of the season to go with a
win, a fifth-place finish, and a 10th place and 12th place result.
It's been a dream season so far as he's successfully avoided any
debilitating accidents in completing every lap of every race. He now
knows that a seventh place or higher finish at the regular season
closer at South Boston Speedway on Aug. 11 will clinch the Northern
Division championship.
"It's going to be a fight to the end," St. Amant said.
"Benny Gordon has won a bunch of races and championships and
he's pushing us to the finish. I enjoy the competitiveness of this
series and to finally race out here with the proper funding,
racecar, and equipment is so much fun. I can't wait for SoBo to get
here."
